Why?
At Shades of Emotion, we aim to underscore MOOD DISORDERS because they are more common than often realized, frequently going unrecognized. Mood disorders, like Depression and Bipolar Disorder, can be triggered by various factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, trauma, and significant life changes.
Our Goal
Our primary goal is to educate and empower our community by breaking down complex topics into simple, relatable content. We'll share insights about symptoms, common causes, and effective coping strategies, as well as ways to seek help. Together, we can create a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable discussing their mental health journey.

Risk Factors
In this project, we defined risk factors as characteristics that increase the likelihood of developing mood disorders. Our main focus was on genetics, as a family history of mood disorders (like depression or bipolar disorder) is one of the strongest indicators of risk.
We also considered:
-
Traumatic or Stressful Experiences: Early experiences, like abuse or significant losses, can lead to mental health challenges.
-
Brain Structure or Function: Certain irregularities in the brain can affect mood regulation.
Protective factors
Protective factors are characteristics that help reduce the impact of these risks. We chose the following protective factors:
-
Strong Support System: Close relationships with family, friends, or mentors provide stability and emotional support.
-
Healthy Lifestyle: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and Omega-3 intake can improve mood regulation.
-
Engagement in Meaningful Activities: Hobbies or interests provide purpose and fulfillment.
-
Positive Coping Skills: These help manage and build resilience.
How did we choose these factors?
Through observations and research, we found that genetics is one of the biggest risk factors for mood disorders. We also saw that lack of sleep and loss of enjoyment in activities contribute to vulnerability. This led us to focus on protective factors that promote healthy habits, support well-being, and help teens manage both genetic and environmental risks.
